A transformative experience
There are moments in our lives when sound transcends the boundaries of time and space, transporting us to a world of forgotten sensations and memories. Over 15 years ago, during a ceremony with a shaman, I had the opportunity to experience such a moment. The sound of the shamanic drum, accompanied by sacred chants, penetrated my being in an unforgettable way.
For the first time, I was transported to another space-time, in the heart of the vast prairies of the American West, in the company of my Native American brothers and sisters. The chants resonated in the Lakota language, and strangely, I recognized them as if I had always known them. The beat of the drum echoed like the pulsating heart of Mother Earth, and before my amazed eyes, herds of wild horses galloped in an eternal dance.
A unique sensation of communion with the entire universe seized me, enveloping every cell of my being with a feeling of completeness and well-being. Three years later, during my one-year apprenticeship diet in the Shipibo tradition, I crafted my own drum. Since then, it has become much more than a simple instrument. It is my guide, my protector, my vehicle for traveling to other worlds.
Today, I feel immense gratitude for this deep and sacred relationship woven over the years. Every beat resonates with the ancient wisdom of our ancestors, every vibration reminds us of our inextricable connection with all forms of life.
The shamanic drum: a gateway to sacred worlds
What is the shamanic drum?
The shamanic drum is a sacred instrument used for millennia in shamanic traditions around the world. Made from natural materials like wood and animal skin, it holds deep spiritual significance for many cultures, including the Hopis, a Native American tribe from the southwestern United States. Among the Hopis, the drum is often used in religious ceremonies and healing rituals to connect with spirits, invoke blessings, and honor ancestors. It is also used in celebrations involving Kachinas, ancestral spirits considered intermediaries between humans and divinities. I invite you to read another article about the Kachinas.
The powers of the shamanic drum
The shamanic drum transcends its simple function as a musical instrument. It is considered a tool for healing and transformation, capable of stimulating altered states of consciousness and facilitating spiritual journeying. The deep vibrations of the drum can help induce a state of deep relaxation, balance the energies of body and mind, and foster connection with the forces of nature and ancestral spirits. Among the Hopis, the drum is often used to restore harmony and balance in the community and to heal physical and spiritual ailments.
