Kindness according to Hopi teachings: a lesson in compassion and altruism

An unexpected lesson from Hopi teachings of kindness

There are lessons that reach us through mysterious channels, infused with the ancestral wisdom of indigenous peoples. In the line of Hopi teachings periodically received from Grandmother Medicine Song, I find myself regularly faced with practical challenges that embody the lessons I assimilate. This is how the integration of this ancient wisdom into my daily life takes place. Recently, as I engaged in assimilating a new teaching, my attention was drawn to the theme of kindness.

Confronted with the practice of kindness

Some time ago, as I received a new teaching with gratitude, I found myself facing an unexpected challenge: that of embodying kindness despite my inner fears and resistances.

It was a day like any other, punctuated by spontaneous gestures of empathy and altruism. I saw myself as someone who always responded to the call of the heart, ready to lend a hand to those in need. But as I was comforting myself in this flattering image of myself, life threw me a surprising test.

Inner resistance and echo of the teaching

A dear friend, a medicine sister, called me to share the fate of another troubled soul: a talented artist, homeless and in distress. She had already done her part by offering her temporary shelter, and she asked me to explore other possibilities for help.

As I listened to her urgent and compassionate story, I felt the tentacles of my own hesitations wrap around my heart. Doubts and fears danced in my mind, seeking to stifle the voice of my generous heart.

"Does this person really want to be helped?", "What can I do for her?", "I can't accommodate her at my place!" - so many excuses and justifications that tried to prevent me from acting according to my deepest values.

The next day, as I struggled with my own inner demons, the echo of Grandmother Medicine Song's teachings resonated within me. I couldn't settle for being still, engulfed by my fears. I had to act, with my heart as my guide.

Determined to transcend my own limits, I seized my phone. Reaching out to a friend, long neglected yet always on my mind, I shared with her the delicate situation entrusted to me. To my great surprise, her response was much more than a mere promise of support.

In a gesture of rare and exceptional beauty, imbued with pure compassion, she offered to open the doors of her home, to provide a warm shelter, and to accompany her on her journey to recovery. Three weeks, she said, the time needed for shadows to give way to light, for the wings of comfort to tenderly envelop. Her generosity, her kindness, acted as a gentle breeze in the tumult of my own uncertainty, revealing the immeasurable beauty of humanity.

It was a moment of grace, a poignant testament to the power of unconditional love. In this outpouring of solidarity, I found a sweet certainty: the beauty of the human heart transcends all barriers, illuminating our path with its benevolent light.

Embracing kindness: together, let's create a brighter world!

In this moment of authentic connection and shared generosity, I realized that kindness is much more than a simple isolated act. It is a surge of the heart that transcends our fears and judgments, paving the way for a contagious compassion that spreads like a sacred fire.

So, the next time we find ourselves faced with our own excuses and justifications to avoid being kind, let's remember this simple yet powerful truth: in the practice of kindness, it is ourselves who receive the greatest reward. And that every act of kindness, small or large, contributes to weaving the invisible threads that connect us to one another, reminding us that we are all members of one and the same human family.
