From my first intuitive steps into shamanic shapeshifting—a journey within where one connects with animal spirits to understand their messages and integrate their wisdom (see the dedicated article)—to my learning with the Hopi lineage, my relationship with the animal kingdom has profoundly transformed.

Over time, I have learned to sense their presence and perceive their suffering with newfound clarity. Their distress moves through me, but so does their strength, resilience, and wisdom. When I encounter a dead animal by the roadside, I pause internally, deeply touched. I offer a prayer to honor its life, thank its spirit, and remember the sacred interconnectedness that binds us to all living beings.
This path of openness took root in the teachings of Grandmother Medicine Song and in the practice of shapeshifting. This shamanic method has allowed me to immerse myself in the energy of animals, feel their vibrations, and forge deep connections with them. Through meditations and inner journeys, I have learned to listen to their messages and perceive what they strive to teach us.
I still have a long way to go, but one thing is certain: my empathy for animals has grown profoundly. Today, I see them not only as spiritual allies accompanying us on our personal quests but also as essential guardians of life's balance. They are mirrors, guides, and bridges to a greater consciousness. Their wisdom invites us to live with more respect, gratitude, and consideration for everything around us.
Connecting to the world through the animal kingdom in the Hopi wheel of life
For the Hopis, animals occupy a central place in the balance of the universe. Each species carries unique wisdom that teaches us how to live in harmony with natural cycles. Whether it’s the bear with its inner strength, the deer with its gentleness, or the eagle with its vision, each animal embodies an aspect of life that we can integrate into our own spiritual path. These encounters with animals constantly remind me of the profound interconnectedness between all forms of life.
The Hopis live by honoring this interconnectedness. To them, animals are not mere resources but sacred beings. While they are not vegetarians—believing our canine teeth reflect a natural adaptation to consuming meat—their approach to hunting is deeply respectful. They only take what they need, thank the animal for its sacrifice, and honor it through rituals. This vision invites us to rethink our own relationship with living beings and adopt an attitude of gratitude and respect.

Reconnecting with the animal kingdom: A spiritual urgency
Today, humanity’s relationship with nature is fractured. Animals, like the ecosystems they inhabit, suffer from the consequences of our intensive exploitation.
The story of the wolves in Yellowstone deeply moved me. Their reintroduction, after decades of absence, transformed the entire ecosystem. These predators regulated deer populations, allowing vegetation to regenerate and other species like beavers, birds, and fish to return. This phenomenon, called a trophic cascade, illustrates how every being plays a crucial role in the web of life. It reminds us of our responsibility to preserve this fragile balance.
Here is a video How Wolves Change Rivers shared by Jim Tree, author of The Way of the Sacred Pipe, which illustrates how connecting with the world through the animal kingdom is essential to preserving our environment and elevating our consciousness.
We are often moved by poignant scenes of animal cooperation or kindness. The image of a dolphin guiding a sea turtle caught in a fishing net to a boat for rescue is one of those moments that awakens our empathy and sense of wonder. These instances remind us of our capacity to love and protect all living beings.
In a world where nature is too often exploited, it is essential to relearn how to respect the animal kingdom. This respect begins with mindful observation and listening to the messages they convey. In Hopi tradition, this includes rituals of gratitude to honor animal spirits and seek their guidance.
How shapeshifting connects us to the animal kingdom
Shamanic shapeshifting is a spiritual path that opens doors to a deep reconnection with the animal kingdom and nature. Through meditative practices and inner journeys, it teaches us to listen to the messages of animals, understand their traits, and integrate their "medicine" into our lives.
By connecting with animals, the Hopis show us how to receive teachings and support in times of doubt or difficulty. For instance, wolf energy can help us find our place within a group, while hummingbird energy reminds us to seek joy, even in small things.
Every animal has a unique role in the circle of life, and reconnecting with their wisdom invites us to restore balance in our own lives. This requires humility, attentiveness, and deep gratitude for the natural world. By honoring these qualities and applying them to our challenges, we not only move toward a more balanced life but also reconnect with a respectful and conscious way of living, where every action becomes an offering to life itself.

The teaching of shapeshifting: Connecting with the world through the animal kingdom
Starting in January 2025, I will offer a remote teaching on shamanic metamorphosis, transmitted by Grandmother Medicine Song. This teaching is an opportunity to recognize and integrate the unique characteristics of a new animal each month. Through guided meditations and specific practices, you will be invited to form an alliance with these animal spirits and use their "medicine" to enrich your daily life and face challenges with greater strength and clarity.
This teaching is a chance to learn how to integrate the qualities of animals into your everyday life. It’s also an opportunity to reconnect with a respectful and conscious way of living, where every action is an offering to life itself.
Relearning to listen to the teachings of life
By rediscovering our bond with the animal kingdom, we restore meaning to our relationship with nature and our own place in the circle of life. Hopi teachings remind us that every living being has a purpose and deserves our respect.
Take a moment today to observe a bird, an insect, or a domestic animal. What do you see in its behavior? How do you feel in its presence? Perhaps you will discover a quality or a message that resonates with your current life.
