"Are You Awake or Asleep?" Awakening to spiritual consciousness

Across the world, many indigenous peoples, perplexed by the presence of the white man, posed this question to him: "Are you awake or are you asleep?" It is deep within the Amazon jungle, where rivers sing ancient melodies and trees whisper long-held secrets, that our story unfolds. It is a place where mystery and wisdom blend into a timeless symphony. Yet, this tale could have unfolded among many other indigenous peoples, guardians of universal truths.

In South America, within this lush jungle, a legend tells of a tribal chief who, faced with a bewildered white man lost in his own illusions, understood that the only way for this stranger to awaken was to offer him the sacred visionary plant. Today, I wish to share with you this tale from the depths of the tropical forest, a story that poses an essential and timeless question: "Are you awake or are you asleep?"

Tale of awakening to spiritual consciousness

Many moons ago, when the earth was young and nature's spirits watched over every creature with ancestral wisdom, a white man named William arrived in a remote village of the Amazon. William was an explorer, a seeker of truth, yet burdened by confusion and ignorance, shadows that obscured his soul.

The tribe welcomed him with curiosity and hospitality, seeing not a stranger but a lost child navigating the labyrinth of his mind. The village chief, a revered elder known as Tupa, observed William with eyes filled with ancient wisdom and deep compassion.

One night, beneath the starlit sky illuminated by ancient constellations, Tupa invited William to sit by the sacred fire. Flames danced and crackled, casting flickering shadows upon the faces of tribe members, evoking whispers of the forest's soul. After a long, mysterious silence, Tupa posed the question: "Are you awake or asleep?"

Surprised and perplexed, William replied, "I am awake, of course. I have come to explore these lands and learn from your people."

Tupa smiled gently, a glimmer of wisdom in his eyes. "To be awake is not merely to have open eyes. It is to perceive the spiritual world around you, to feel the deep connection between all things. Do you truly see the spirits of the forest, hear the ancestors' songs in the wind? Are you awake enough to know that you journey within a soul's body at this moment?"

William fell silent, the chief's words echoing in his troubled mind. He realized he was blind to a broader, deeper reality, a truth his eyes and mind had never before considered.

Journey of spiritual consciousness

Tupa then decided to guide William on a journey into the world of spirits. For several days, they prepared themselves by purifying their bodies and minds with sacred plants and ancient chants. Each chant was a vibrant prayer, each plant a delicate bridge to the unseen. Then, one night under the soft, silvery glow of the moon, Tupa offered William a cup containing a preparation of plants, the sacred medicine of the jungle. The potion was a portal, a key opening doors to other realities.

The vision

William closed his eyes, the cup trembling in his hands, and drank slowly. The jungle around him seemed to breathe in unison with his own breath, a primal rhythm shared by all of nature. He was transported to a realm of light and shadow, where each vision revealed deep connections between all living beings. Trees whispered ancient secrets like silent prayers, rivers sang hymns of creation, and stars danced in a cosmic ballet synchronized with his heartbeat. In the world of spirits, all was One. William experienced UNITY, feeling the profound integrity of the universe. A soft yet powerful voice resonated within him:

"Remember, you are a spirit incarnated to experience the mysteries of matter. Enjoy the pleasures of life, but do so with awareness of the interconnectedness of all that exists. Take nothing from the earth without giving in return. Live in harmony with nature, listen to the wisdom of the elders, and open your heart to universal love."

Awakening

Upon his return, William was no longer the same; he was awake. A profound spiritual consciousness had awakened within him, offering a new understanding of the interconnectedness of all things. He now remembered where he came from: a spiritual being incarnated as a human, here to experience matter, to savor sensory pleasures, while remaining aware of the sacred interconnectedness that binds every aspect of existence. He understood that this human experience was precious but must be lived with acute awareness of spiritual interconnectedness.

William thanked Tupa and the tribe members, promising to share this newfound wisdom with his own people. Though he could not reveal the secrets of the jungle's sacred medicine, he conveyed an essential message: awakening of consciousness comes through balance and reciprocity with nature. He learned that taking nothing from the earth without giving in return, living in harmony with nature, listening to the elders, and opening one's heart were keys to a spiritually enriched life.

Tupa, with a smile filled with wisdom and kindness, said to him, "Remember, awakening is a journey, not a destination. Continue to walk with an open heart and eyes that see beyond appearances."

William left the village, carrying within him the light of awakening, a light he hoped to share with others. Thus, the question "Are you awake or asleep?" became a flame of awakening, a powerful call to spiritual consciousness for all who heard this tale.

The call to spiritual consciousness

This Amazonian tale reminds us that spiritual awakening is an inner quest, a profound journey toward understanding our connection with the world. May this story inspire us all to ask the essential question: "Are you awake or asleep?" and to awaken our own spiritual consciousness.
